The Duffer Brothers clarify Stranger Things season 4 plot hole regarding Eleven

Stranger Things season 4 has definitely been worth the almost three year wait! For many, it’s become their favorite season, or their favorite after season 1 (like me!). It’s been a very solid and scary story, and we’ve still got two exciting episodes to come!

There’s a whole host of people who work on a television series. There’s the writers, the crew, and of course the creators and showrunners. And no matter how diligent a creative team is, there’s bound to be some mistakes that happen. The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, did admit recently that they forgot Will’s birthday. Accidents happen.

One plot point that had viewers talking was not a mistake the series accidentally overlooked as fans thought. In the fourth season, we learn more about Eleven’s backstory and her time at Hawkins Lab. Fans thought there was a plot hole, but that wasn’t the case.

Duffer Brothers clarify Stranger Things 4 plot hole

Season 4 introduces us to a time when there were numerous kids serving as test subjects at the lab, just like Eleven. All of them are articulate and able to speak “normally.” We all remember when we first meet El in season 1. Her speech is much more limited than where it is today.

And yet in her flashbacks as she relives her suppressed memories through the Nina Project, the young hero’s speech isn’t limited at all. And there’s a reason for it. The Duffer Brothers recently spoke to Variety and clarified why her speech doesn’t line up with the El we met in season 1.

According to Matt Duffer, in season 4 volume 2, we’re going to learn more about what happened to El following the traumatic event in the rainbow room. After the episode 7 cliffhanger, El goes into a coma, wakes up, and doesn’t remember what happened. For fear of such a thing happening again, Dr. Brenner decides to raise her in “total isolation.”

So he chooses to focus solely on her. She lives alone, in an isolated room. This is the Eleven that we meet in Season 1. Two years in isolation and really limited memories of what had happened to her. And so that’s one reason for the speech.

Well, now we have the explanation! And it definitely makes sense. The events that occurred are certainly going to be shocking to El, and it was such a big reveal and plot twist for us as well!

Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 drops July 1 on Netflix.
