Why trading O'Neill isn't best option for Cards

Tyler O’Neill has been the subject of drama recently. This is no reason for the St. Louis Cardinals to trade him now, however.

When St. Louis Cardinals' manager Oli Marmol publicly criticized outfielder Tyler O’Neill for what he perceived as a lack of effort, baseball fans saw it as a sign of dissatisfaction. However, after the initial disagreement, Marmol clarified that his intention was to help O'Neill reach a new level.

Although it would have been better if the matter had been resolved privately, the criticism has raised concerns about how much longer the Cardinals will keep Tyler O'Neill on the team. O'Neill is a former two-time Gold Glove-winning left fielder.

Cardinals rumors: Why Tyler O’Neill trade is not a good option for St. Louis

During the offseason, Tyler O'Neill made several changes to his training routine, placing more emphasis on running and explosiveness. O'Neill attributed his slow speed while rounding third base to these changes and the rainy conditions. He acknowledged that it was not a valid excuse, but it was his perspective at the time.

Tyler O'Neill is currently the most experienced outfielder for the Cardinals, despite the fact that he has been moved to center field. Dylan Carlson, who plays both left and center field, was unable to finish Monday's game and did not play in Tuesday's game against the Rockies due to neck spasms. It's uncertain how long he will be out of the game.

Lars Nootbaar, who is capable of playing any position in the outfield, is currently on the injured list due to a thumb injury. Although he was eligible to be taken off the list on Monday, it's unclear how much longer he will need to stay on it.

As a result, Alec Burleson is now responsible for playing left field, while Jordan Walker, the Cardinals' top prospect, takes care of right field. Juan Yepez and Brendan Donovan may also be useful as versatile players in the outfield.

With so much change and uncertainty in the outfield, the Cardinals rely on Tyler O'Neill's experience and dependability.

The Cardinals' primary requirement is starting pitching. Including Tyler O'Neill in a trade package could potentially land them a top-tier starting pitcher, which would be a significant gain. However, this move could also create new challenges. Although the team would acquire a new pitcher, they would also lose a top defender with a powerful bat.
